Hall 7, Sala del Gonfalone
Room 7: Sala del Gonfalone (the room of standards) still preserves the character of a classically inspired sixteenth century court environment. The vault is frescoed with the coats of arms of the kings of Spain and the Spanish governors of Milan. In the centre of the room, the precious Gonfalon of Milan embroidered and painted in 1566 can be seen. The banner is in embroidered fabric worked by Scipione Delfinone and Camino Posterla and also painted. It is well known for the design of Saint Ambrogio by Giuseppe Meda. The Patron of Milan is represented on both sides of the standard while driving the Arians away, flanked by painted scenes of episodes from his life and lower down coats of arms from the town gates. Hanging on the walls are tapestries with biblical themes, examples of very fine craftsmanship worked in Brussels.
