The Pirelli skyscraper, familiarly called "Pirellone" by the Milanese, is nowadays seat of the "giunta" (executive, administrative council) of the Region of Lombardy as well as some of their offices. It is situated in Piazza Duca D'Aosta near Milan's busy "Stazione Centrale" the main railway station. It was built between 1956 and 1960 according to a design by Gio Ponti in collaboration Pier Luigi Nervi, Fornaroli, Rosselli, Valtolina and Dell'Orto. It is an architectural work renowned for its sleek stylishness. The plan of the lower part of the rectangular building covers an area which apparently diminishes as the eye travels upwards, giving the illusion of its becoming narrower with the sides of the building sleekly tapered in respect to the elegant main façade broken by an angular edge casting a vertical shadow in its wake. It is a hundred and twenty seven metres high making it one of the tallest buildings in reinforced concrete in the world. It is one of the most famous landmarks in Milan as well as being the highest skyscraper in Italy. The construction was originally built to house the offices of Pirelli the famous Italian tyre industry. Subsequently the skyscraper was bought by the Region of Lombardy and transformed into its main seat from 1978 onwards. On April 18th a small tourist aircraft piloted by Gino Fasulo, aged 64, a Swiss-Italian, crashed into the 26th floor of the building badly damaging the outside of the structure and some of the offices. Apart from Fasulo two employees of the Region of Lombardy were killed outright on that tragic afternoon. Today a memorial dedicated to the victims commemorating the terrible incident can be seen on the 26th floor. After a complete reconstruction of the external façade and interiors, the building was reopened and since the end of May 2005 is once again the headquarters of the regional government of Lombardy housing the representative offices of the "Giunta" and the meetings and sessions of the "Consiglio Regionale". The "Pirellone" will be used for this purpose until the planned new seat of the "Regione Lombardia" in the Garabaldi-Repubblica area is ready. The top (31st) floor of the skyscraper is due to be opened to the public shortly. A public viewpoint is foreseen and temporary exhibitions will be held there.
